Hepatitis C is caused by a virus transmitted by blood transfusion, needles, sexual intercourse and other methods. After transmission, the hepatitis C becomes chronic in a majority of cases. Chronic hepatitis C can lead to cirrhosis and liver cancer.

Hepatitis C can be detected by a blood test. Liver biopsy may be needed to find out the stage and extent of liver damage. Fortunately new treatment is effective in eradicating hepatitis C in more than 50 percent. The treatment requires treatment for upto a year.
